RED TAILS may be a stinker?

George Lucas’ apparent last official entry in to blockbuster Hollywood filmmaking is the upcoming film RED TAILS, which he produced. Rumours have it that he stepped in behind the scenes and took over a lot of the directing duties as well despite not being credited.

Aint It Cool News has posted one of the first reviews of the film and it doesn’t look good:

For those of you who have heard the stories of how much of RED TAILS executive producer George Lucas may or may not have directed/re-shot personally, try to put such thoughts out of your head as you attempt to watch this story of the first-ever squadron of African-American pilots to fly in combat. It’s better if you hate this film on its own merits rather than because Lucas may have pushed aside credited director Anthony Hemingway and put his hands all over this worthy story, turning it into a horribly written, trite adventure film that cares more about aerial battles than it does about telling the glorious but often heartbreaking account of the segregated Tuskegee airmen of World War II.

Tintnin 2, Jurassic Park IV and Roboapocalypse from Spielberg!

While doing the rounds to promote his latest film WAR HORSE, legendary director Steven Spielberg gave some updates on a few of his other projects expected to see the light of day soon.

On Tintin 2: “The script is now being written and Peter will start working on the film this year. When he’s done shooting "The Hobbit", he’ll begin his performance capture work with the actors later in 2012, which I’m very excited about. I’m hoping I’ll be able to direct the third one. I’d love to do the third one because I had so much fun on the first one.”

On Jurassic Park IV: “I can tell you that I’m not directing it. I’m producing it though.”

On Roboapocalypse: “It’s about the consequences of creating technologies which make our lives easier, and what happens when that technology becomes smarter than we are."

Ridley Scott opens up a little on the sequel to BLADE RUNNER.

Famed Hollywood film director Ridley Scott recently spoke a bit about the announced sequel to his cult classic film BLADE RUNNER.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Scott said, “I think I’m close to finding a writer that might be able to help me deliver. We’re quite a long way in, actually.” He also stated that it is liable to be a sequel and not feature any of the characters from the first film.

Ridley Scott is currently making “Prometheus”, his return to the Alien franchise.

PUSS IN BOOTS takes top spot with $34M at the USA Box Office 28-30 October 2011

Leading the way this weekend was Dreamworks latest installment in the Shrek franchise, PUSS IN BOOTS, which opened to a solid if unspectacular $34 million over the weekend. This is a decent result, and with good reviews and overseas grosses counted, this film will be a good winner, even though it will not scale the same glorious heights as the early Shrek films did.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 scares up $52.6 million at the USA Box Office 21-23 Oct 2011

Proving not to be a one trick pony film series, the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY franchise opened to its best numbers yet as the third installment amassed a whopping $52.6 million over the weekend. Using the same formula, but updated, and applying the same production techniques as the first two films with a low cost of $5 million, this is a massive win for distributor Paramount and is testament to their ability to shepherd this franchise to this level of success. A fourth film is now inevitable, and the franchise has now taken the coveted Halloween horror spot that the SAW franchise once occuped through its run.

“PAUL” is THE new alien on the block! Very funny film.

REAL STEEL beats remakes with $16.3M at USA Box Office W/E 14-16 October 2011

Two more remakes that opened this weekend were not able to topple REAL STEEL from top spot. The robot boxing film starring Hugh Jackman earned a solid $16.3 million this weekend, down 40% on last weekend. The well reviewed, crowd-pleasing film has earned $51.7 million domestically so far, but it has a high production cost of $110 million. REAL STEEL still has some work ahead of it to recoup that investment.

REAL STEEL wins top spot with $27.3M at USA Box Office W/E 7-9 Oct’11.

The Hugh Jackman starring robot boxing film REAL STEEL was good enough for top spot this weekend, earning a solid $27.3 million and easily leading all the competition. Despite the silly sounding premise, the film received better than average reviews which could help its box office going forward.

The other new opener for the weekend was the George Clooney political thriller THE IDES OF MARCH which opened to $10.4 million, or around the same amount of money as his usual efforts in this genre. The result re-affirms the notion that George Clooney is a dependable, if not big box office office draw.

Robot boxing movie REAL STEEL earns $8.55M at USA Box Office Fri 7th Oct-11.

It is a strange time in box office land when a movie about robot boxing starring Hugh Jackman finds its way in to top spot.
